- About Us
Van Cortlandt House Museum and grounds are a lovely oasis away from the din of New York City’s more urban areas. Our lawn is well groomed and fastidiously kept free of broken glass. While separated from the larger Van Cortlandt Park by a wrought iron fence, the grounds are both private and public. Keep in mind that Van Cortlandt Park is one of New York City’s most popular destination parks with thousands of patrons using the park on any given day during the busiest seasons. Your guests can enjoy informal tours of the first floor of Van Cortlandt House or relax with a cool beverage in the shade of one of our many magnificent shade trees. If you are considering a wedding or event rental at Van Cortlandt House Museum and are not familiar with our location, we recommend you start with a visit to the site.
Van Cortlandt House Museum and its grounds are available for rent for private events such as weddings, birthday or anniversary parties, and corporate functions. For all events, indoors or out, there are restrictions enforced by the Administrator’s Office of Van Cortlandt Park, which we must abide by. These restrictions include the following:
• No cars are permitted in Van Cortlandt Park. Deliveries of rental equipment, food, and floral decorations are allowed, but all requests must be made no later than 60 days prior to your event.
• All events must end by 9:45 p.m. so that all clean-up can be completed no later than 10:00 p.m.
• Any use of amplified sound requires a permit from the New York Police Department. Permits can be obtained at the 50th Precinct, located at 3450 Kingsbridge Avenue, Bronx, NY. Phone: 718-543-5700.
• All permit applications must be submitted to the Van Cortlandt Park Administrator’s Office no later than 60 days prior to your event. The staff of Van Cortlandt House Museum will assist you with filing a permit application. Please note that filing an application does not guarantee that your permit will be granted.
Inside the Museum House, our charming Herb Cellar is available for rent. It features original 18th century framing beams over-head and soft lighting lending a tavern-like atmosphere. The Herb Cellar can be accessed directly from outside the Museum or through the Museum allowing your guests to experience the first floor of the historic house as part of your rental. Rectangular folding tables and chairs are available for your use or you may choose to rent round tables. Maximum capacity is 36 people for a seated meal or 48 people at a stand-up event such as a cocktail party. For corporate meetings or retreats, the room can be set up as a lecture hall with up to 60 chairs.
Outside on the Museum Grounds within the wrought iron perimeter fence you are able to set up a tent to accommodate up to 200 guests. The lawn is well-suited to corporate or association picnics or an informal family reunion. The Museum grounds will be reserved for your exclusive use during the time of your rental, but please keep in mind that Van Cortlandt House Museum is unable to restrict parks patrons from using public paths which pass by the Museum grounds. Because outdoor rentals take a toll on our lawn, we reserve the right to restrict outdoor rentals based on the condition of the grounds.
Our Mission:The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America actively promotes our national heritage through historic preservation, patriotic service, and educational projects.
